Rosalind Newman has created a body of over 80 works. Her New York company, Rosalind Newman and Dancers, had major seasons in New York and toured the US and Europe performing in many prestigious international festivals and venues. The company received funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, NY State Council on the Arts, and various foundations. Founding artistic director and choreographer of Dance HK/NY in Hong Kong, the company had highly successful seasons in Hong Kong and on international tours to Taiwan and the United States.
As a senior lecturer in modern dance at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts works choreographed for the Academy dance ensembles were performed in Hong Kong and toured to festivals internationally. Ms. Newman has also set her works on a number of companies including London Contemporary Dance Theatre, Pacific Northwest Ballet, and Diversions Dance in Wales. She has taught widely as a guest artist and teacher at the Rotterdam Dance Academy, North Carolina School for the Arts, London Contemporary Dance School, Western Australia Academy of Performing Arts, Wesleyan University, and New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.
Recognized with a number of distinctive fellowships and awards, they include the Guggenheim Foundation, New York Foundation for the Arts, and National Endowment for the Arts. She received two Hong Kong Dance Alliance awards: in 2001 for her choreography for Dissolves and in 2012, with Pewan Chow for their production of Maze.
She was Course Leader for the Master’s in Choreography program at the Laban Centre in London and is presently on the faculty of the Conservatory of Dance, SUNY Purchase. Ms. Newman has a PhD in contemporary dance from the London Contemporary Dance School at the University of Kent.
